K-Indie on Gaon’s Digital Chart, 2012.06.17~2012.06.23

Barely had Busker Busker begun their exit from Gaon’s digital chart before they released their first album ‘closing’ mini album made an even bigger impact than the album before it. It debuted at the very top of Gaon’s album chart and the songs offered good competition to many other new releases on the digital track chart. Even with all the new releases, Busker Busker’s first album is now at position 11, only one slot lower than last week.

Also debuting on the album chart is Epitone Project‘s 낯선 도시에서의 하루, starting at position 16. However, though the songs from the album all entered the track chart last week only the lead track remains. Tete too had his first album Eclipse debut on the album chart, at position 49, though none of the songs could be found on the track chart.

Gate Flowers remain on the album chart with their first full-length album, down nine positions since last week now located at position 82. Nell on the other side have now disappeared completely both from the album chart and the track chart this week.

Among the indie themed newcomers on the chart there is the new 10cm single, the new Guckkasten single and the song from the new Lena Park album that features eAeon. There is also the new digital single from Daylight, released June 19th.

Big Baby Driver has contributed to part 3 of the soundtrack for SBS drama A Gentleman’s Dignity (신사의 품격) both with lyrics and song on “You Are Everywhere” and with her own “Spring I Love You Best”, previously released on digital single and the 5th Anniversary Electric Muse compilation. The soundtrack single was released on June 10th.

Acoustic Collabo released digital single 첫사랑 Part.1 on June 22nd as the first part of their First Love Project. The single introduces two new songs and instrumental versions of the same. A music video for single track “첫사랑의 멜로디” has also been released:

K-Indie on Gaon’s Digital Chart, 2012.06.10~2012.06.16

The new charts from Gaon are out. We find that Busker Busker moved down just one spot with their first full-length, now sitting at position 10. Gate Flowers’ first album has now fallen down to position 73 whereas the soundtrack of Shut Up! Flower Boy Band has climbed to position 79. New on the album chart is RossyPP‘s 29, though none of the songs made it to the track chart.

After debuting in the top 5 of Gaon’s Korean album chart last week, Epitone Project‘s second full-length album has now left the top 100, though all songs from the album remains on the Korean digital chart.

Many of the other songs that debuted on the chart last week have since climbed a bit, including Verbal Jint‘s collaboration with 10cm‘s Kwon Jung Yeol. The release also seems to have increased interest in his previous collaboration with The Black Skirts.

Among the indie related newcomers on the digital chart this week there’s both Standing Egg and Shin Se Kyung with Sweden Laundry. There is also Daybreak’s Lee Won Suk, that has recorded the song “러닝맨” for MBC drama I Do I Do (아이두 아이두) released as part 3 of the soundtrack on June 13th.

K-Indie on Gaon’s Digital Chart, 2012.06.03~2012.06.09

Last Thursday came the Gaon charts for the week prior and after seeing the number of indie related titles on the chart decreasing over the last few weeks it has once again been filled by all the titles from a new album — this time Epitone Project‘s second full-length album which also debuted on the album chart at position five.

Busker Busker’s first album stayed put on position 9 on the album chart, but the songs from it have been falling. “골목길” even left the top 200.

The first full-length album from Gate Flowers lost fifteen spots and is now number 41 on the album chart. Nell‘s Slip Away lost three spots, now at position 84, whereas the soundtrack of Shut Up! Flower Boy Band currently holds position 94 on the album chart, loosing twenty seven spots since last week. After six weeks total Peppertones‘ Beginners Luck has now left the album chart top 100.

On the total digital track chart we find Verbal Jint‘s collaboration with 10cm‘s Kwon Jung Yeol. The position is lower than what we saw from his collaboration with The Black Skirts last year, but it does make its debut higher.

Guckkasten did remarkably well when making their first appearance on I Am A Singer 2. Even so the song doesn’t place as high as the songs from I Am A Singer used to, but that is likely from a combination of I Am A Singer 2 having yet to regain the popularity of the original series while Big Bang and Wonder Girls both released new material the same week. As can be seen from the chart, Guckkasten’s appearance on I Am A Singer 2 has already served to increase interest in their older songs.

Among the singles entering the chart there are the latest offerings from Broccoli, you too? and Yozoh. There is also the song recorded by Park Jiyoon for MBC drama I Do I Do (아이두 아이두), released on June 4th.

K-Indie on Gaon’s Digital Chart, 2012.05.27~2012.06.02

The new charts from Gaon are out and the presence of Busker Busker remains strong. Their first album is currently at position 9 on the album chart, the lowest position it has held until now, but all songs from it remain in the top 200 of the digital track chart.

Since last week both the soundtrack from Shut Up! Flower Boy Band and Peppertones’ Beginner’s Luck have done a bit of climbing on the album chart, currently holding position 67 and 74 respectively. Nell‘s Slip Away that re-entered the album chart last week has instead fallen a bit, down twelve spots to position 81.

Gate Flowers released their first full-length album Times on May 29th and it ended up debuting on the album chart at position 26. Kim Ji Soo‘s mini album Vintage Man om May 30th and landed it at position 37 on the album chart. However, unlike Gate Flowers, Kim Ji Soo can also find the new lead track on the digital chart:

K-Indie on Gaon’s Digital Chart, 2012.05.20~2012.05.26

After a week at a lower position on Gaon’s album chart, Busker Busker‘s first album is back at position 2. The album has now exceeded thirteen million downloads with over seventy thousand physical copies sold. Meanwhile a few of their songs have done some modest climbing on Gaon’s total digital Korean track chart while most have instead been falling.

Nell‘s Slip Away left the album chart last week but has now made a comeback at position 69. The Shut Up! Flower Boy Band soundtrack has instead fallen twenty size spots down to position 75 and Peppertones‘ Beginner’s Luck has fallen even more, down 41 spots to position 89.

Irish traditional band Bard released their second full-length album Road to Road last week and managed to enter the album chart at position 80. However none of the songs made it to the chart and neither did any other indie tracks:

After three weeks of climbing Gaon’s Korean album chart, Busker Busker‘s first album has now fallen back to position 7. The falling is reflected also on the total digital Korean chart, where the songs on the album have fallen more than ever before.

Climbing a bit on the album chart is Peppertones Beginner’s Luck that moves up two spots to position 48. Instead moving down two spots, to position 49, is the soundtrack for Shut Up! Flower Boy Band.

The new Free Market album My Present entered the album chart at position 96, but failed to make any mark on the digital track chart. Instead the only new indie related tracks entering the chart are more on the mainstream side, with Daylight‘s new single and a new song from Park Jiyoon.

It’s yet another week with Busker Busker climbing Gaon’s album chart while the album songs move down a bit on the digital track chart. Their first album currently holds position 2, two up since last week.

Peppertones have been falling on both track and album chart, with their new album Beginner’s Luck falling twenty four spots down to position 50. After having no less than three albums on Gaon’s album chart last week, Nell now have none. The soundtrack for Shut Up! Flower Boy Band (닥치고 꽃미남 밴드) has made a sudden jump up to position 47 on the album chart.

Besides new positions and Nell’s “Cliff Parade” falling out of the top 200, looking at the Korean indie music tracks on Gaon’s total Korean digital chart there aren’t that many changes since last time.

Much like last week Busker Busker could see their songs falling on the digital chart while their first album did a bit of climbing on the album chart, this time moving up one spot to position 4.

Peppertones‘ Beginners Luck has been moving down 18 spots on the album chart, landing it at position 26. The songs have taken an even bigger fall, with only album lead track “행운을 빌어요” still in the top 200 of the Korean total digital chart.

Things are looking similar for Nell, with Slip Away down fifteen spots to position 58 on the album chart and only two songs from the album still on the digital chart. On the positive side, some of Nell’s older albums have seen big sales increases with Separation Anxiety from 2008 landing at position 74 and Healing Process from 2006 at position 93.

Many indie songs fell out of the top 200 on the digital chart with only two songs from Oksang Dalbit‘s new mini album Each Other.

K-Indie on Gaon’s Digital Chart, 2012.04.22~2012.04.28

On the latest edition of Gaon’s charts we find Busker Busker‘s first album move up three slots to position 5 since the week before. The songs from the album on the other hand have all moved done the Korean total digital chart and out of their Superstar K3 songs only one remain in the top 200.

Nell‘s latest album topped the Korean album chart last week has instead done some heavy falling all the way down to position 43. On the song side there’s been even bigger falls for Nell, with two of the songs falling out of the top 200.

Like Busker Busker and Nell, Peppertones too start out on the track chart with all songs from their recently released fourth album Beginner’s Luck entering the top 200. The album itself is currently ranked number eight.

J Rabbit got the lead track off their new album Looking Around on the digital chart although the album can not be found on the album chart. Yellow Monsters on the other hand had their new EP We Eat Your Dog entering the album chart at position 48 but no song on the digital chart.

K-Indie on Gaon’s Digital Chart, 2012.04.15~2012.04.21

Gaon has a new set of charts out and from the album chart we can find that Busker Busker‘s first album has moved one slot down to position eight. The slight change on the album chart is also reflected on the total Korean digital chart, where much like on Billboard’s K-Pop chart for this week they had to leave the top position for Sistar‘s “Alone”.

Although Nell started out well on the chart with songs from their new album the previous week, they’ve had to see most tracks take quite a fall since. On the album chart on the other hand, we find Slip Away debuting on the chart, making it all the way up at no. 1.

Whereas Busker Busker’s Kim Kwang Jin cover “동경소녀” climbs a few positions on the chart, Yozoh had to see her version of the same song leave the top 200. However as Yozoh’s song from Love Rain entered the chart she maintains a presence. The only other new song from the indie realm entering the chart is the lead track off Daybreak‘s third full-length album.

Yoon Jong Shin has another of his Monthly Project singles released on April 10th. For this April single we again find Seoul Electric Band‘s Shin Seok Chul, Moida Band‘s Choi Hoon and Cho Jung Chi playing the instruments, with Cho Jung Chi also being credited with the arrangement of the song, “나른한 이별”. As so often Yoon Jong Shin has featured a vocalist and this month is Joe Won Sun, who first made herself a name as the vocalist of acid jazz trio Roller Coaster. A music video for “나른한 이별” was created by Offbeat:

K-Indie on Gaon’s Digital Chart, 2012.04.01~2012.04.07

It is the second week for Busker Busker’s complete first full length album to be seen on any of Gaon’s charts. With the album climbing to #1 on the album chart since last week it is not much of a surprise to see the songs climb individually on the total Korean digital chart as well.

The only new indie related entry on the chart this time is the lead track off Soran‘s first full-length album, placing right under the song from the album featuring 10cm‘s Kwon Jung Yeol released on digital single a week earlier. Already in the lower half of the top 200, according to an article from CJ&M enewsWorld Soran say that Kwon Jung Yeol has already apologized for not being able to bring the song greater success.

K-Indie on Gaon’s Digital Chart, 2012.03.25~2012.03.31

Following Busker Busker‘s strong entry on Gaon’s total digital Korean chart last week it was only expected that more songs of theirs would enter as the full first album was released. In fact their doing even better than 10cm did when they released their first album a year ago, but the of course 10cm’s popularity has grown since. With the full album entering Gaon’s album chart on position 3, as an added bonus for Busker Busker it seems interest has increased also in their older songs.

K-Indie on Gaon’s Digital Chart, 2012.03.18~2012.03.24

The latest total Korean digital chart from Gaon was presented a couple of days ago, and unlike the week before there are quite a few new entries coming from the realm of Korean indie music.

Busker Busker, runner up on Superstar K3, have just released an album that we’ll be writing more about later this weekend and came out strong with it’s title track. Save for the title track off SHINee‘s latest mini album that made it all the way to the top, Busker Busker actually outdid all other SHINee tracks.

Although last week offered at least a couple of convincing releases there is no sight of any new indie entries on the latest total Korean digital chart from Gaon. Even Shut Up! Flower Boy Band song “Love U Like U” that made it onto last weeks Billboard K-Pop chart is out of sight. What’s worse is half the songs from last week are out. Here’s hoping things’ll look if only a little better next week.

The Gaon charts covering last week are out and for the Korean digital chart we again find Big Bang holding up the top spots. Looking to the indie related entries we find three songs out and three new songs in, but also 10cm‘s “안아줘요” climbing back into the top 200 at a rate earning it a ‘hot’ mark rather than letting us see exactly how many positions it has gained since last time.

Although Peterpan Complex have been promoting their fifth full-length album with a music video for “감정을 삼키고”, it is their second main track of the album that has made it to the chart.

Those looking to learn a bit more on Skull will want to read this recent interview from CJ E&M enewsWorld: [Interview] Skull: Korea′s Lone Reggae Musician. The interview itself does not touch specifically on the collaboration with Oksang Dalbit, but it provides some insight into reggae in Korea.

Turns out we had missed Park Jiyoon entering the chart with the Yongrin arranged “Quiet Dream” last week, but we’ll be keeping track of it from now on. Since this list is all compiled manually there’s bound to be the occasional mistake. Feel free to point it out when you spot one and let us know if there is any artist you think is missing.

From now on we’ll also keep track of duo Two Months as they for the first time have entered the chart with a song outside of their competition in SuperStar K3. The song “The Romantic” was released on a digital single with the same name on February 10th. In addition to the regular version the single includes a piano version and an instrumental version of “The Romantic”. It was released as part 1 of the soundtrack for the tvN ‘real love variety’ show with the same name.
